Tori Freedman & Onyx

XJ8A7634aOnyx joined me and my boyfriend in 2014 in Pasadena, California. The local SPCA has a deal that on every Friday 13th they have black cats for adoption for $13, so one Friday the 13th in June my boyfriend and I went to go rescue our new fur baby. We knew we wanted a black cat and we preferred getting a male, mainly because we had the name already chosen and needed to find the perfect kitty that would fit it— Onyx. Onyx had been found in an alley as a four-month-old kitten with his sister and they were both taken to the Pasadena SPCA. His sister was adopted just one week before we got Onyx (my boyfriend and I wish we could have gotten them both together, and always dream about reuniting them).XJ8A7575aAt the time my boyfriend and I were living in an old Bungalow in Pasadena that was built in the ‘20s and had original hardwood flooring, and our landlords did not allow dogs. My boyfriend grew up with cats, so we felt like it was the perfect addition to our family. Now 4 years later I can officially say I am a crazy in love with cats lady![gallery ids="2188,2187" type="rectangular"]I like to say that Onyx and my boyfriend are kindred spirits and are really one in the same, that's why I love them both so much! Onyx is quiet and shy at first, but once he gets to know you he really opens up and shows you how cool he is in a really effortless sort of way (exactly like my boyfriend). They are also both creatures of habit to the max! They sleep in the exact same position/place every night-- Onyx curled up in my boyfriend’s left arm and me in his right arm. Onyx has the same routine every day: same food and treats that he loves and has been eating for years. He does not stray far from windows as they are his favorite place in the house. He loves people watching in the windows in the front of our house and can’t get enough of watching birds in the windows in the back of our house.XJ8A7678aThree years ago, my boyfriend and I moved across the country from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, which of course meant Onyx also relocating. He was such a great traveler, and sat right in my lap the whole flight. He made friends with all our neighbors in flight. Onyx adjusted very quickly to Philly and loved the upgrade in space (we went from a 600-square-ft bungalow to a 1,100-square-foot triplex) which is great for running and jumping back and forth all over the apartment. Onyx loves sleeping on a fresh pile of vintage denim, and enjoys to listen to the oldies station on the radio.XJ8A7548a
